What is golf?

QUOTATION: Golf is an open exhibition of overweening ambition, courage deflated by stupidity, skill soured by a whiff of arrogance.
AUTHOR: Alistair Cooke

QUOTATION: Golf is not a game of great shots. It’s a game of the most misses. The people who win make the smallest mistakes.
AUTHOR: Gene Littler

Golf is defined in many ways in all sorts of reference literature. Simply stated, Golf can be defined as an outdoor game governed by spesific rules, played in a predefined area in which the player uses specialized clubs to either loft or roll a ball in the fewest possible strokes, into a fixed hole.

The origins.
They are many schools of thought on the origins of golf and up to this day the question as to who truly invented golf, still begs to be answered.

jeu de mail. Played in France since the 16th century.
chole  was played in Flandres and in the North of France since 1353.
Het Kolven.A game similar to golf was played During the 14th century.
There was also kolfspel from Holland , the Roman paganica and a few others.

In 1457, James II and his parliament sitting in Edinburgh prohibited the game of golf. This apparently was the first known reference to the game known as GOLF. The one point on which everyone tends to agree is that the game as we know it today, grew and developed in Scotland.
